p019fig01.13 Affective circuits are organized into opponent channels, such as fear vs. relief, and hunger vs. frustration. On a larger scale of affective behaviours, exploration and consummation are also opponent types of behaviour. Exploration helps to discover novel sources of reward. Consummation enables expected rewards to be acted upon. Exploration must be inhibited to enable an animal to maintain attention long enough upon a stationary reward in order to consume it.
